Amoya - InOut Music Residency & Exchange
In 2013, Zal Sissokho from Montreal graced us with a concert and our first kids' workshop as part of the Franco Connection at the Roots Em Route Arts Festival. In 2014, Chico Antonio from Mozambique was confirmed for CINARS in Montreal, where he met Zal Sissokho before heading to Hamilton, Ontario, as our artist in residence. This meeting led us to Sergio Perere from Brazil, who became our2016 artist in residence. A musical collaboration emerged, which we shared with our touring network partner, IGODA, resulting in a trio that toured Southern Africa. Thus, the idea of InOut Music in Residency & Exchange began to take shape.
From 2021to 2022, our founder, while in Mozambique, developed a research series focused on traditional musical instruments in the province of Inhambane. He invited Chico Antonio as an artist in residence at the Machavenga Cultural Centre to support this research and explore ways to incorporate these instruments with conventional ones, all while preserving the original sounds performed by the indigenous people of Inhambane. The culmination of this work was to be presented at the Roots Em Route Arts Festival, aimed at sharing knowledge and connecting Canadian Aboriginal musicians with African artists.
Tragically, in early 2023, Chico Antonio passed away, leaving behind a rich legacy and a shared responsibility for those who hold similar values and visions to continue creating their own narratives. In response, Zal and Sergio reached out to us, asking how we could honor Chico's memory. Amoya: InOut Music Residency & Exchange is our tribute to Chico Antonio and the profound power of music to connect people across different beliefs.

Terms & Conditions
The artists in residence will present their work in Mozambique for the Southern Africa and CPLP Music Business Industry, and will tour Southern Africa as part of this collaboration. Agents and festival directors from our network and conference will work together to identify opportunities for sustainable tours for the selected artists.

Selected artists will be paired with artists from Mozambique, South Africa, Botswana, Mexico, and Brazil.
Be available in February 2025 to meet other artists in residence in Hamilton, Ontario, during the BIPOC Creative Industries Conference, followed by a showcase at the Roots En Route Arts Festival 2025.
Be available in November/December 2025 to tour Southern Africa (Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Eswatini, Zambia, and Zimbabwe).
Be available in November 2025 to tour Brazil, Mexico, and Canada.
The selected artistsin residence will present their work in Mozambique for Southern Africa and CPLPPerforming Arts Program Directors.

"In 2013, we had the privilege of presenting Carmen Souza and Theo Pascal from Cabo Verde, and the experience blew our minds. We became friends and continued to connect to develop new ideas. In 2014, we launched the Hamilton World Music Festival, inviting the energetic and multitalented Hai Von and her band Som Bit from Mexico, as well as Yolanda Kakana and her band, supporting their debut tour in North America. Due to their success, they returned to Canada in 2017 for another tour, leading to new conversations about the Festival Quem Disse Que As Mulheres Não Podem Fazer Uma Serenata? which focuses on women's empowerment through music and the arts. Inspired by this, we proposed a partnership to connect women in music from CPLP and the Americas, strengthening our collaboration, resulting in the Serenata: Women in Music Residency & Exchange."
We invite women in the music business from Canada, the Americas, Southern Africa, and CPLP countries to apply for the Serenata Women in Music Residency & Exchange. This initiative is designed to empower female artists, producers, and music professionals by providing a collaborative environment for creativity and networking.
We will select 12 submissions from Canadian women in music:
Two Black women in music
Two Indigenous women in music
Two People of Colour in music
Two White women in music
Two Francophone women in music
Two Disabled women in music

Through the Roots En Route Exchange Network, we are proud to host the initiative Art Eco-Scientific Logic: Residency & Exchange for Visual and Craft Arts in2025, here in Hamilton, Canada. Coordinated by C/A Arts Management (Portugal/Brazil) in partnership with the Machavenga Cultural Center (Mozambique), this initiative marks the first step in our efforts to connect creators from Southern Africa, CPLP, and the Americas, providing a platform for global exchange and collaboration.
The first session of the Artistic Residency will take place in Hamilton from February 25 to March 25, 2025, followed by the second session in Inhambane, Mozambique, from November 1 to December 18, 2025.
We invite artists and creators from eligible countries to apply for the Art Eco-ScientificLogic Residency & Exchange, which focuses on the intersection of art, ecology, and scientific inquiry. This residency aims to support innovative projects that explore ecological themes through visual and craft arts."
Open to visual and craft artists and creators who are citizens, born, or residents of Canada, the Americas, Southern Africa, and CPLP countries only.
All submissions must be received by December 1st , 2024
Selected participants will receive residency support, opportunities for collaboration, and the chance to showcase their work in a culminating exhibition in Canada, USA, Brazil, México, Spain and Mozambique.
