Since 2013
The Roots En Route Arts Festival, celebrating Black History Month, began in February 2013 with a desire to create opportunities for local artists to perform at professionally presented events. In addition, Matapa sought to provide a platform for the local community to learn, share and celebrate the diversity of the black Canadian and global experience in Hamilton.
The Roots En Route Arts Festival features a variety of artistic mediums including dance, theatre, film, poetry and music.In June 2013, Matapa launched the Queer Cabaret, as an annual celebration of the lives and art of LGBTQ2S people of colour.
The Cabaret came out of recognition that LGBTQ2S people of colour experience marginalization in both LGBTQ spaces and other explicitly “cultural” spaces. The Queer Cabaret was, to our knowledge, the first event of its kind in Hamilton, and has since set the precedent for more culturally diverse programming in the LGBTQ community. This artistic celebration also serves as an annual event, around which the LGBTQ2S- of-colour community can coalesce.

The work we do here would be impossible without your help and dedication. To establish Hamilton and Southern Ontario as a Vibrant Cultural area is the goal of Matapa. Bringing together and creating fans of music from around the world, continues to be our driving force, as we steadily becomes Southern Ontario’s choice for new music and art. While we love having fun and seeing great artistic performances, Matapa's philosophy is also political.
One of our main goals is to foster the arts, particularly from marginalized groups, by both building spaces to feature their work and supporting cultural producers in their efforts to secure a livelihood through their work. We believe that art saves lives and is a crucial form of social engagement.
An annualMatapa membership entitles you to reduced rates on ticketed events and theMatapa merchandise, entry to VIP events at reduced rate, and participation inour Annual General Meetings with the opportunity to vote on and shapegovernance and programming decisions.
